Portrait of an Unknown Man and Woman. Once called Vasari and His Wife. Sofonisba Anguissola (Italian, 1532–1625). Oil on canvas. National Trust, Attingham Park.
The earlier Vasari title is understandable as there is a strong resemblance to Giorgio Vasari, a contemporary of Anguissola. Vasari (1511–1574), was an Italian painter, architect and writer. He is most famous for his book “The Lives of the Great Architects, Painters and Sculptors of Italy”, which is usually known as “Vasari’s Lives.”
