Mademoiselle Geneviève Vix dans le rôle de Salomé (1920). Kees Van Dongen (Dutch, 1877-1968). Oil on canvas. New National Museum of Monaco.
Vix (French, 1879-1939), after study at the Paris Conservatoire, made her début at the Opéra-Comique in 1906. In Madrid in 1922, as Thaïs and as Richard Strauss’ Salomé, she showed an ‘adorable nonchalance’ combined with her good looks and capricious sense of rhythm to fascinate her audiences.
