Twenty Minutes Past Three (1886). Thomas William “Tom” Roberts (Australian, Heidelberg School, 1856–1931). Oil on canvas.
The woman appears worried as she stares at the grim-faced man edging past the door. She has put aside her reading which perhaps has been replaced by the clock, showing that it is twenty minutes past three. Perhaps her husband has returned after a futile search for their child. She fears that there has been a misadventure.
