There is an archaic calm which emanates from the woman who is wapped in thought. The classic triangle composition is presented here - emphasizied by the woman’s head and her two elbows. No detail distracts the gaze. Hofer avoids narrative gestures. This way, he achieves an concentration on the main character, who becomes the painting’s only message, supported by the dark background.
