Inspiration (1898). William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French, Realism, 1825-1905). Oil on canvas. Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, Ohio.
Bouguereau’s Classical figures have a monumentality and vitality that derives directly from the artist’s unique imagination and his vision of Classical antiquity. Inspiration is a formidable example of the later tableaux de fantasie of the artist. The sitter was probably Odile Charpentier. Bouguereau chose a sitter from the Italian community of Paris to pose for his Classical theme.
