Woman with Guitar (1943). Marie Laurencin (French, 1883-1956). Oil on canvas. The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, Jacksonville, Florida.
The sitter’s porcelain skin, demure mouth, and widely set almond eyes are particularly striking and the flat planes of pastel hues are typical of her work. Her work has been referred to by critics as a sophisticated form of modern primitivism. Laurencin achieves an ephemeral elegance with her unique combination of simplified forms, graceful lines, and pleasing palette.
