Marie Francoise Julie Constance Filleul, Marquise de Marigny (c.1767). Alexander Roslin (Swedish, 1718-1793). Oil on canvas.
One of Madame de Marigny is quite obviously for effect, has a nice color, but the touch is soft. There is uncertainty in the drawing, the dress is well made but the head is not right. The figure collapses, is not supported. The arms and hands are formless, the throat is flat and grey and then on the face, there is a sullenness. — Diderot, Salon 1767. Tough critic.
