The Poetess Sappho. Circle Jacques-Louis David (attr. to François Gérard, French, 1770-1837). Oil on canvas.
Lyrical and lush painting depicts Greek poetess Sappho writing on her wax tablet the name of her lover, Phaon, and presumably the start of a poem or love note, as she looks to the small statute of Eros for inspiration. Gérard’s name is inscribed on the reverse with the date 1819.
