Regency lady reading. Journal des Dames et des Modes (1811).
There were a limited number of genteel occupations appropriate for the Regency lady. Reading was one such unexceptional pastime - provided the book wasn’t one of those shocking Minerva press novels - and so much the better if it could be combined with a healthy walk in the countryside, like the lady pictured. The lady is engrossed in her book and her walk has been interrupted.
I love her — also the hem of her dress.
