1. The Art of Painting (circa 1666–1668). Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, 1632 bap-1675).

    The young woman, who represents the muse of history Clio, holds in one hand a trumpet, standing for fame, and in the other a large book, perhaps a volume by Thucydides or Herodotus.

    Most experts believe that Vermeer did not reveal significant information about his own working methods in this painting. Both the artist’s palette and chest with drawers, which would have contained the rest of the necessary materials, are both conspicuously absent
