    Ava Gardner at the piano. In the 1946 film, The Killers, Ava Gardner first appeared sitting at a piano wearing a black satin gown with a halter-styled bodice. Costume designer Vera West’s vision stood throughout the film up until the last minute. Ava Lavinia Gardner (1922–1990) was signed to a contract by MGM Studios in 1941 and appeared mainly in small roles until she drew attention with her performance in The Killers (1946).
