In the Garden, Corfu (1909). John Singer Sargent (Realism, American, 1856-1925). Oil on canvas. Terra Museum of American Art, Chicago.
Sargent did this painting at the height of his fame, following the period of his commercial portraits. Completed in 1909 on the island of Corfu, on the west coast of Greece, it shows the artist’s older sister Emily (1857-1936) twice—on the far right and in the center—together with their close friend Eliza Wedgwood (1859-1947), a member of the famous porcelain manufacturing family who often accompanied them on their travels, on the left.
