Thomas, an American painter and lithographer, was 63 and relatively unknown as an artist when he submitted this design to a competition sponsored by the Parisian newspaper L’Éclair. The jury chose this poster out of 500 entries. And yet, despite this brief success, Thomas never appears to have created another published poster.
